What to Expect

If you've never experienced counselling before you might feel nervous or apprehensive, which is quite normal. It takes courage to take that first step.

You might be struggling with memories from the past, the pain of loss, stress in daily life, relationships, self-esteem or wondering why you repeat a pattern of behaviour. Within counselling there is no judgement, just a safe, confidential place to explore. It can be life-changing.

Your therapist will remain impartial and empathetic,  without judgment. They  may offer information or resources, but they will never tell you what you should do. You are the expert on your life!

Introduction, Assessment & Contract

An assessment session gives you a chance to explain your needs, meet your therapist and see if they are right for you. They will explain more about therapy and answer your questions. They will advise on how therapy might help or point you towards someone better qualified if appropriate.

If you choose to continue, they will help you choose the best approach based on your preferences. They will also explain the contract including confidentiality, your rights, fees and so forth.

Talking Therapy

Sessions are 60 minutes and will keep to time to maintain wellbeing and safety.

You may explore topics including your relationships, childhood experiences, feelings, behaviors, past and present life events, and any challenges you may be facing.

The aim is to empower you with the tools and skills to tackle issues on your own terms.

The goal is to help you develop insights, strategies, and skills that enable you to navigate life's challenges and enhance your quality of life.

Counselling or Psychotherapy?

The two terms are often used interchangeably, however, counselling tends to be more focused on a specific issue and short-term goals.

Psychotherapy  is a longer-term process to gain insight into unconscious or deep emotions. Sometimes looking at childhood experiences, unresolved conflict or  relationships that shape personality, thoughts and behaviours.  This may involve a wider range of therapeutic techniques and approaches.
